What are Community Games?
In 2012 Community Games provided a wonderful and unique opportunity for communities from all backgrounds right across the country to come together to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and create their own Olympic or Paralympic moment. But the good news is that the Community Games programme is continuing and will give communities the chance to celebrate in 2014 and beyond.
Community Games offer something for everyone. You don’t need to be sporty to take part – they are just as much about celebrating cultural achievement as sporting endeavour. The aim of the programme is to bring communities together, supporting them to organise a Community Games for their community, which might be their street, estate, local interest group – essentially the Games will be run by communities for communities.
We are thrilled that due to the success of Community Games in the West Midlands, it became a national programme and gave over 1,600 communities up and down the country the chance to celebrate in 2012.
Why is Energize STW supporting Community Games?
The Community Games programme is very close to Shropshire’s heart. They are inspired by William Penny Brookes’ original Wenlock Olympian Games which started in Shropshire in 1850 and ultimately provided the vision for the modern day Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin County Sports Partnership (CSP) is heavily involved in the effort to bring the benefits of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the local area. The aim is:
To use the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to ensure a lasting legacy in terms of culture, health, sport, business and tourism within Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.
How will the Community Games programme benefit local people?
Energize believes that Community Games is an excellent programme, not only because of our special historic connection, but also because Community Games will give communities a chance to work together, celebrate together and strengthen the spirit of Shropshire’s diverse communities.
Each Community Games will be unique and will give local people and their families the chance to experience something new and have fun. Because the Games are an opportunity to take part in or be a part of both sporting and cultural activities, they offer something for everyone.
This is an opportunity to bring the spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics and the Wenlock Olympian Games in to local communities but offers a chance to build community bonds that go beyond 2012.
