Making a splash on Shropshire teambuilding adventure

A Shropshire business consultancy enjoyed a rafting adventure on the river Severn as part of their commitment to developing a healthier and happier workforce.

Energize, the county sports partnership for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, linked up Ironbridge-based Pleydell Smithyman with the team from Shropshire Raft Tours.

Ben Harper, senior partnership manager at Energize’s Shrewsbury headquarters, explained: “Getting out of the office, relaxing and being a little more active is a key part of developing a workplace which is healthier and happier.

“An important part of our work is to help set up active links with local companies, and signpost some of the incredible opportunities which are right on their doorstep, here in Shropshire.”

The Pleydell Smithyman team spent a teambuilding morning on the river Severn, rafting under the Iron Bridge.

Sarah Wheale, project consultant at the company, said: “We’re very lucky to be based in glorious Ironbridge, but sometimes take it for granted. Not on this occasion, though, thanks to the team at Energize and Shropshire Raft Tours.

“Having been buckled into our life vests and gone through the all-important safety briefing, we boarded our bright orange and surprisingly comfortable raft.

“Our great guide, Nigel, took to the paddles and showed us the Ironbridge Gorge from a completely different perspective. Every working day we see it from our office windows and walks to the Co-op, but this time we saw it from the river.

“Nigel told us about the history of the river, the world-famous bridge, and his own globetrotting rafting adventures.

“We learnt more about the place where we work and its rich history, spent some time together as a team, and had fun.

“Some of us even took to the paddles to control the raft – some more successfully than others! It was a great way to start the day.”

Sarah added: “Our river adventure has inspired us to spend more time out and about together, trying new activities and growing our team building skills.

“The help from Energize arranging the trip, and the experience provided by Shropshire Raft Tours, gave us the kick-start we needed . . . and now we’re planning our next activity.”

Energize has also launched a new interactive online tool to show Shropshire businesses how they could make their workers feel healthier and happier.

The workplace self-review tool challenges companies to answer 10 simple questions, then produces a tailor-made report with top tips, and links to additional support services and resources.

Ben said: “Our motto for being physically active in the workplace is – if you’re not doing anything, try to do something. And if you’re already doing something, try to do a little more.

“If companies feel they need extra support to get things up and running, Energize can provide a free one-to-one advice and guidance meeting, staff training or ‘Energize Your Workforce’ consultant to come and work in your business.”
