Shropshire companies ‘Swing for Bling’ for a second year
Shropshire companies were challenged to ‘Swing For Bling’ in the return of a popular community golf competition.
The second Swing For Bling Open was held at The Shropshire Golf Centre in Muxton, Telford, with seven teams of four taking part.
Each team had to be made up of at least three beginners, and no more than one experienced player.
For the second successive year, it was Shifnal-based storage specialists Proplas Sub-Contract Limited which lifted the trophy. Greenhous Group entered two teams, and its Telford foursome was named the best team of beginners.
Swing for Bling was co-ordinated by county sports partnership Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, with the support of local golf clubs and coaches, the County Golf Partnership, and Associated Telecom Solutions from Shrewsbury.
Helen White, Business Development Officer at Energize, said: “We launched Swing For Bling last year as a fun way to support new golfers, and give them the skills and techniques to get out onto the course, and it was a great success.
“Swing for Bling is a leisurely way for people to try the sport, removing the barriers of cost, lack of equipment and knowledge of how to start.”
The seven teams, including two all-female teams, competed over nine holes of ‘texas scramble’ golf. Everyone who took part had also received four sessions of professional ‘Get into Golf’ coaching in the weeks leading up to the competition.
Coaching took place at Shrewsbury Golf Club with John Richards, Telford Golf Club with George Boden, Horsehay Golf Club with Matthew Lea, or The Shropshire Golf Centre with Lisa Shervill.
Helen White added: “The golfers who took part said that the whole experience was a great introduction to golf, and really enjoyable.”
