I support voluntary community sector organisations across Shropshire, Telford, and Wrekin. With a background in sports development, I specialise in helping sports clubs and physical activity providers with governance, funding, safeguarding, volunteer recruitment and retention, marketing, and sustainability. Alongside Amy, Michelle empowers voluntary and community organisations to address the challenges they face when supporting those experiencing the most barriers to being active.
Gemma Britton

Increased cost of living
The rising cost of living, driven by factors like Covid's financial legacy, global supply chain issues, and inflation, is affecting sport and physical activity across the UK. Sport England reports that two-thirds of adults have changed their physical activity behaviour, and these challenges are expected to have a larger impact than previous recessions.
Health and Activity Concerns
This crisis may lead to serious public health issues, including:
-
Increased cardiovascular and respiratory problems due to colder homes.
-
Poorer nutrition as food budgets shrink.
-
Worsening mental health from financial stress.
People from low-income backgrounds, those with disabilities, and older individuals are most affected, with many reducing or stopping physical activity altogether.
Volunteering Decline
Rising costs are also affecting volunteering, with many reducing their involvement to focus on paid work. Organisations struggling with their own rising costs may be unable to reimburse volunteers, particularly in rural areas, leading to reduced participation and diversity.
Local Impact
Shropshire, Telford, and Wrekin are identified as high-risk areas, with challenges including poor insulation, reliance on cars, and a low-wage economy.
Support and Resources
Sport England offers guidance to help organisations reduce energy costs. Local councils provide resources for residents and groups:

Communications
Effective communication can really help the management of your club, community group or organisation. Regular and relevant communications play a vital role in engaging and retaining your participants and volunteers.
It is important to consider your current approach to communicating with your participants and volunteers, the key messages your participants and volunteers might benefit from hearing and how you can quickly plan and deliver improvements to the way you communicate.
Visit Buddle's Marketing and Communications section to learn more.
-
Inclusion
Organisations need to understand and communicate with their communities, to determine what they need. This may mean developing a family offer, considering the roles of parents and carers, offering hardship funds, or making facilities more accessible.
Buddle's guidance explores how to engage women and girls, disabled people, older adults, the LGBTQ+ community, ethnically diverse groups, children and young people, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Learn more about Actio
Actio is dedicated to improving and developing activity opportunities for children and young people aged 0-25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and their Parent Carers in Shropshire.
-
What is the aim?
As a partnership, our aim is to improve the range, quality, and access to activities to help children and young people with SEND thrive in Shropshire.
We want to see an offer that supports children and young people to develop their social skills, physical health, and work towards their individual identified outcomes.
-
A joined-up programme
The Actio Partnership strives to deliver a joined-up programme of quality activity and support for children and young people with SEND and their families, building a sense of community and achievement.
Actio is responsible for commissioning, promoting, and monitoring Shropshire Council's 'All In Short Breaks' activities and work with children and young people up to aged 18, and their families, to ensure the programme responds positively to feedback and comment.

Connecting people with nature
Our belief in the benefits of moving more in nature has led to a strong, ongoing partnership with Shropshire Wildlife Trust. Together, we’re exploring the role of Green Social Prescribing at a system-wide level. We’re proud to have secured UK Shared Prosperity Funding for this initiative until March 2025.
Donnington, Telford
Donnington has significantly worse health outcomes compared to the Telford & Wrekin borough and England averages, with high rates of early death, lower life expectancy, high levels of deprivation, high levels of obesity in both children and adults and a large proportion of residents reporting poor health or long-term illness (Telford & Wrekin Council, 2014; Energize, 2024).
We want to instigate change for the future health and wellbeing of Donnington by improving local services, developing new or existing projects and programs, changing local infrastructure, connecting, and supporting existing and new services and service providers and facilitating community consultation and community-driven events.
Eliminating Inactivity in Communities
The members of our community who have the MOST to gain from being active are often those who are currently the LEAST active. Adding just a few more minutes of physical activity into daily routines can lead to significant improvements in physical and mental well-being, as well as better outcomes when managing long-term health conditions. This is why our focus is on ELIMINATING INACTIVITY, to foster a healthier, more connected, and thriving community for everyone.
