Celebrating the impact of the 2024-25 School Games programme

2-MINUTE READ

2024-2025 School Games

As we launch our Impact Report, we're excited to share how thousands of young people across the county have been empowered, moved, and inspired over the past academic year through physical activity and leadership.

A Year of Growth and Participation

  • 2,400 young people took part in the School Games events during the 2024-25 academic year. Nearly 900 more than the previous academic year.

  • 16 sports were provided, three more than the previous academic year.

  • There were 18 events focused on three formats -  Compete, Inspire and Engage - with equity and inclusion considered throughout.

  • Over 700 pupils of the 2,400 that took part competed in final rounds - representing their School and School Games area within the county.

  • So much positive feedback was received from the school pupils, young leaders and teaching staff throughout the School Games programme across the academic year.

Breaking Barriers to Participation

The three formats of our School Games events - Compete, Inspire and Engage - enable barriers to be removed for young people who want to compete but also offering opportunities for those who don't want to compete, but take part through the Inspire and Engage offers.

The events also addressed barriers that often limit young people's engagement in physical activity, such as confidence and self-esteem challenges, peer pressure, and mixed-gender settings.

By creating a welcoming space and providing a wide range of activities, the School Games events empowered participants to explore what they enjoy most about being active.

The Impact

Over the past year, the School Games has continued to provide opportunities for children and young people to be active, develop life skills, and feel the many benefits of physical activity.

Our interactive report highlights:

  • The reach of the School Games across schools and communities

  • The positive outcomes for young people’s confidence, wellbeing, and leadership skills

  • Examples of inclusive practice ensuring that many young people have a chance to take part

  • Stories from schools, teachers and young people about the difference made by the School Games programme.

The report demonstrates how the School Games is more than physical activity - it’s about creating a sense of belonging, opening doors to new opportunities, and building healthier, more confident futures for our young people.
