Place-focused work
We're pleased to share an exciting update on our plans for place-focused working: more funding to help make positive change in communities that need it most.
-
Background
A £250m commitment was made from Sport England back in November 2023 to boost levels of physical activity among those in greatest need, from the most inactive communities, based on significant evidence of place-focused investment improving activity levels through Sport England's Local Delivery Pilots.

Why Telford and Wrekin?
We have been working in Donnington, in Telford and Wrekin, since July 2024, and from our partnership working and knowledge, we know we can do so much more when taking a whole-systems approach to tackling inactivity with key partners working across the Borough.
Telford and Wrekin was one of 27 places in England chosen to receive funding from Sport England. Over £400,000 of funding has been provided for this work until March 2027.
All 27 places are in the top 20% of the country for inactivity, social need, deprivation and health inequality.
-
Local collaboration
Our aim is to work collaboratively with local organisations, groups, and residents across Telford and Wrekin to break down the barriers that prevent people from being active and improving their wellbeing. By supporting those experiencing the greatest inequalities, we can make the biggest impact.
Along with representation from five local partners, we have created the Telford Strategic Oversight Group.
Who made it happen?
Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, was the lead applicant for the funding on behalf of the Telford Strategic Oversight Group.
The group consists of representation and engagement from five partners:
-
Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin
-
Telford & Wrekin Council
-
Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care System
-
Lloyds Bank Foundation / Unlocking Potential In Telford
-
Voluntary Community Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector led by Telford Chief Officers Group (Telford COG)
What are we doing?
We’re working alongside local organisations, groups, and residents to create a healthier community and reduce health inequalities. Funding from Sport England is designed to tackle inactivity and inequalities by making sport, physical activity and movement accessible for everyone.
We aim to understand the conditions needed to address behaviours around physical inactivity, and to understand how we can best embed behaviours and a change in culture across Children and Younger People, Acute Settings & Adult Social Care, Green assets, working adults, and more.

More opportunities
We have applied to Sport England for funding similar work in Shropshire. Our application for Place Universal Offer funding is being considered. We hope to share positive news about this soon.
