Promoting Movement in Hospitals – Energize at Princess Royal’s ‘Movement Matters’ Day

2-MINUTE READ

Background

Deconditioning – the physical and cognitive decline caused by inactivity, particularly after hospitalisation – is a significant concern in healthcare.

Encouraging movement and activity among patients is vital to aid recovery, prevent further health complications, and support independence.

Across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, we are working in partnership with local hospitals and community services to address this challenge.

How Energize Got Involved

As part of our commitment to improving health and community outcomes, Energize STW’s Live Longer Better Manager, Christina Morgan, has been actively involved in supporting the integration of physical activity into hospital care.

Christina recently delivered a pilot study at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital exploring how movement can be encouraged during patients’ hospital stays (read more here).

Building on this, Christina was invited to speak at the Movement Matters Day at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, an event aimed at empowering NHS staff to better support patient movement and recovery.

What Happened

During the event, Christina delivered an engaging and well-received session to hospital staff, focusing on the importance of movement to counteract deconditioning. She also discussed the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin falls referral process, including pathways for physical activity support following hospital discharge, as well as wider support for loneliness and isolation.

A highlight of the session was a practical demonstration led by Christina, who introduced chair-based strength and balance exercises, as well as neuro-exercises that stimulate the brain and aid a patient’s recovery.

The Impact

Feedback from Christina’s session at the Movement Matters Day was overwhelmingly positive with all ratings being excellent

This response highlights the appetite among NHS staff for practical, evidence-based strategies to support patient wellbeing through movement.

Next Steps

Energize STW will continue working closely with the local health system to explore how the learning from the recent pilot study and events like Movement Matters Day can be embedded into everyday hospital practice. This includes expanding training, promoting community-based strength and balance programmes, and improving referral pathways for ongoing physical activity support after hospital discharge.
