Strength in Movement: The Growth of Tai Chi and Qigong in Telford
2-MINUTE READ
Background
In 2021, the Chinese Arts and Culture Centre in Telford received funding from Sport England's Tackling Inequalities Fund to develop Tai Chi and Qigong classes. These ancient practices are well-known for reducing stress, improving balance and strength, and enhancing overall health, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions. The classes were offered in both face-to-face and virtual formats, making them accessible to a wider audience, including those hesitant to attend in person or unable to travel.
How Energize Got Involved
Energize STW supported the initiative by offering resources and guidance to help the programme grow. They provided free mentoring and training opportunities through their Futureproofing programme, aiding the sustainability of the Tai Chi and Qigong classes. This support allowed the centre to expand and establish "Faye Tai Chi Friends," a community group dedicated to promoting Tai Chi and Qigong.
What Happened
The classes, initially funded by Sport England, were led by Faye Yip at the Chinese Arts and Culture Centre in Telford. The hybrid model, combining in-person and live-streamed sessions, enabled more people to join, including those with disabilities or long-term health conditions. Faye’s classes grew significantly, with up to 60 participants in some sessions and a wide age range, including individuals over 70. The classes offered seated versions, making them accessible to everyone, regardless of physical ability.
In September 2023, Faye shared how the classes had flourished. She now offers four classes per week, and participants reported a variety of mental, physical, and social benefits, such as improved confidence, reduced anxiety, and enjoyment from being part of a supportive community.
The Impact
The Tackling Inequalities funding allowed the group to purchase essential equipment and laid the groundwork for Faye’s expansion into further opportunities. Faye Tai Chi Friends became a community group focusing on Tai Chi and Qigong, and Faye was able to apply for additional grants, including Sport England's Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Fund.
Participants in the classes expressed numerous benefits:
- "The mind-body link builds confidence and relieves anxiety and stress."
- "I feel relaxed but energized after the sessions."
- "I enjoy taking part, and the social aspect of being in a group is wonderful."
Energize STW’s mentoring and support have been key to the long-term success of these classes, helping Faye develop a sustainable model with a clear vision for the future. As interest in Tai Chi and Qigong continues to grow across Telford and beyond, the collaboration between the Chinese Arts and Culture Centre and Energize STW will likely yield even more positive results.
