Young lives improved through the Chances Programme

2-MINUTE READ

Background

The Chances programme, funded by Big Issue Invest, Sport England, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), has transformed the lives of over 6,000 young people across England. Substance manage the Chances programme across 21 local authority areas in England.

Since 2021, Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin has led this initiative locally, with Shifnal’s Brightstar Boxing Academy as the delivery partner. Through sport and physical activity, the programme focuses on improving outcomes such as school attendance, employment prospects, and reducing offending behaviour among vulnerable young people.

How Energize Got Involved

As the local Active Partnership, Energize STW partnered with Brightstar Boxing Academy to deliver the Chances programme in Shropshire. This collaboration aimed to provide young people at risk of exclusion, low school attendance, or involvement in the judicial system with opportunities to re-engage through boxing, mentoring, and education. Brightstar offered structured sessions tailored to individual needs, emphasising both personal development and physical activity.

What Happened

Since the programme’s launch, Brightstar has worked with nearly 300 young people, establishing strong partnerships with 19 schools. Their dedicated team has delivered 633 sessions, totalling 2,692 hours, helping participants achieve accredited qualifications such as the Boxing Leaders Award and ASDAN Sports and Fitness courses. Personal mentoring and physical activities have helped many participants rebuild their confidence, regulate emotions, and re-engage with education or work.

Notable success stories include Chris, who overcame anger issues and substance abuse to become a valued member of Brightstar’s boxing squad, and Ethan, who moved from school refusal and depression to achieving qualifications and inspiring others through talks and volunteering.
